UNDP in The Gambia

Resident Representative's Message

The establishment of the UNDP in 1965 created the main channel of global multilateral technical and development cooperation. Over the years, then UNDP's support for country programmes has evolved in response to change as a result of diverse factors ranging from the impact of globalization to the UNDP's intense focus on sustainable human development based on support for the priorities for poverty eradication.

The change process and the UNDP's central role in the United Nations have given it comparative advantages in areas such as policy dialogue, coordination, acting as a catalyst and supporting sensitive governance and gender issues. The United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) provides an important mechanism for ensuring a clear division of labour among the respective United Nations Development Group ( UNDG) members, establishing complernentarities among their programmes based on common country assessments and using common country indicators to identify needed and strategic areas of intervention.

Here in The Gambia, the UNDP has been working with the Government find people since 1975 to address national development issues. Its activities touch virtually every sector of development in its endeavour to bridge technological gaps, render assistance in policy formulation, manpower training, capacity building, mainstreaming gender, and stimulating socioeconomic growth to improve the living standards and quality of life of the people.

As the unifying force within the United Nations for the promotion of Sustainable Human Development, the UNDP Gambia Country Office has been working to strengthen the resident coordinator system and encourage more coherent, collaborative and cost-effective programming of the office.
